During the meal, Jesus took and blessed the bread, broke it, and gave it to his disciples:
Take, eat.
This is my body.
This is my body.
Taking the cup and thanking God, he gave it to them:
Drink this, all of you.
This is my blood,
God’s new covenant poured out for many people
This is my blood,
God’s new covenant poured out for many people
for the forgiveness of sins.
I’ll not be drinking wine from this cup again until that new day when I’ll drink with you in the kingdom of my Father.
-The Gospel of Matthew
I am so thankful for the gift of communion.
There is such a sacred beauty in the simplicity of the elements.
The bread & wine.
The Body & Blood of Christ.
I love that Jesus encouraged us to remember Him in this way.
I love even more, that when we come to the communion table, we are not only reminded of what He has done for us but of what He is intending to do.
Someday, we who share His identity here on earth, will feast together at His banquet table in heaven.
Until then... Jesus desires us to be in communion with Him. Not just on the first Sunday of the month as is the tradition in our church. But all day. Every day.
“We who have turned our lives over to Christ need to know how very much
he longs to eat with us, to commune with us.
He desires a perpetual
Eucharistic feast in the inner sanctuary of the heart.”
-Richard J. Foster, Celebration of Discipline
